FLAC

Supported by the system for nearly a decade, and still unwelcome in the Music app.

In short

iOS and macOS have decoded FLAC since 2017 — the Files app will play one. What they will not do is let it into the Music library, which only accepts Apple's own formats. So FLAC on an Apple device plays perfectly and has nowhere to live, which is why people assume it is unsupported.

The decoder is there and the Files app uses it. The Music app does not: adding a FLAC to an Apple Music library means converting it to ALAC or AAC first. Both statements are true at once, and the gap between them is the whole story of FLAC on iOS.

Lossless, and what that actually means

FLAC compresses audio the way ZIP compresses a document: the file gets smaller and nothing is discarded. Decode it and you have the original samples back, bit for bit. MP3 and AAC do the opposite — they throw away what the encoder judges you will not miss, and no amount of decoding brings it back.

That makes FLAC the right format for a music collection you mean to keep. If you have ripped a CD or bought an album you intend to hold onto, FLAC preserves the master and can be converted to anything later without a second generation of loss. Going the other way — an MP3 converted to FLAC — makes a large file of exactly the same damaged audio, and is one of the more common wastes of disk space on the internet.

Whether you can hear the difference on a phone with wireless earbuds is a separate question, and the honest answer is usually no: Bluetooth re-encodes everything on the way to the earbud anyway. The case for FLAC is preservation, not playback.

Why the Music app refuses it

Apple has its own lossless format, ALAC, which it released as open source in 2011. The Music library is built around Apple's formats, and FLAC was never added to the list — not for any technical reason, since the system already carries a FLAC decoder for everything outside that library.

So the practical situation on an iPhone is: the Files app plays your FLAC, third-party music players play your FLAC, and the Music app pretends it does not exist. If you want your collection in Music, converting to ALAC is lossless and reversible — the same audio, a different wrapper.

If you would rather not convert, the answer is a music player that manages its own library. Playlists, artwork, gapless playback and an equalizer all work on the file as it is, and nothing is duplicated.

Keeping a lossless music collection on an Apple device

  1. Leave it as FLAC and use a music player with its own library

    No conversion, no second copy, and the artist, album and cover art in the files are read as they are. This is what FoxDL does — FLAC sits alongside everything else in the same library, goes into playlists, and gets the equalizer and background playback like anything else.

  2. Convert to ALAC for the Music app

    Lossless in both directions, so nothing is lost — but you now hold two copies of a large collection, and the second one exists only to satisfy one app.

  3. Convert to AAC for the phone and keep FLAC at home

    The sensible compromise for a large collection and a small device. Keep the lossless masters where the disk is cheap and carry a compressed copy.

Two things worth knowing

FLAC from an MP3 gains nothing

Lossless compression of already-damaged audio preserves the damage perfectly at five times the size. Check the source before converting anything upward.

Hi-res files are much larger and rarely audibly better

24-bit/192 kHz files are three or four times the size of CD quality. The extra resolution matters when producing music; the evidence that anyone can hear it on playback is thin.
