What’s new

Every version, and what it brought

The App Store gets a paragraph per release. This is the whole list, and it stays in step with what the app actually shipped.

Version 1.0

Not yet released

The first release.

Everything below is what FoxDL is on the day it arrives, rather than a list of changes from a version that never existed. Later entries here will be shorter and more specific.

Playing

  • A player with its own decoding stack for video and music: MKV, MP4, M4V, MOV, AVI, WebM, FLV and WMV, plus HLS streams — no conversion step and no separate codec to install.
  • Every subtitle and audio track inside a file stays selectable while it plays, and nothing is switched on until you ask for it.
  • Playback position, subtitle choice and audio track are remembered per file.
  • Picture in Picture, background listening, AirPlay, playback speed and a sleep timer.
  • A ten-band equalizer with presets, and per-file volume normalisation.

Downloading

  • A background download engine that keeps working after you leave the app and resumes from the exact byte after a dropped connection or a reboot.
  • Multiple connections per file where the server supports byte ranges.
  • HLS downloads: the segments are fetched and remuxed into a single MP4 with a working scrub bar.
  • Detection of playable media in the built-in web browser, through six separate channels rather than one.

Live TV and IPTV

  • M3U playlists and Xtream Codes accounts, with the programme guide and catch-up where a provider offers them.
  • Playlists in the millions of channels: a 485 MB list of two million entries imports in 123 seconds and adds 9 MB to peak memory, because the file is streamed to disk rather than read into memory.
  • Search across a whole provider list in about 400 milliseconds.

Files and transfer

  • A real file manager: folders, moving, renaming, ZIP archives, and pulling the audio track out of a video.
  • Wi-Fi Transfer from a browser on your computer, with a PIN and per-operation permissions.
  • Device-to-device transfer over WebRTC, introduced by a six-digit code.
  • Cloud accounts — Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, pCloud, Baidu, Aliyun — and any WebDAV server, including Nextcloud and ownCloud.
  • External drives and folders browsed in place, without copying anything in.

Privacy

  • An encrypted vault: files are encrypted with ChaCha20-Poly1305 under a key generated on the device, wrapped once by the vault passcode and once by a recovery code. No copy of that key exists anywhere else.
  • A decoy vault, for the situation where refusing to unlock is not an option.
  • App lock with a passcode and biometrics, in its own window so nothing shows behind it.
  • No accounts and no sign-up. Analytics are anonymous, carry no file names, paths, URLs or credentials, and can be switched off permanently.

On each device

  • iPhone, iPad and Mac from one purchase, with the iPad and Mac layouts built for their screens rather than stretched.
  • An Apple Watch companion and home-screen widgets.
  • On Mac: a menu bar, multiple windows, ⌘-click selection, and the player in a window of its own.

Your library, finally in one place.

Free to download. No account, no sign-up, nothing to hand over.
