How do I play MKV files on iPhone, iPad or Mac?

MKV is a container, not a codec: one file holds the video, several audio languages and several subtitle tracks together. iOS and macOS have never opened it natively, which is why a downloaded MKV usually ends in "cannot play this format" or a half-hour conversion.
FoxDL carries its own media engine. It reads the container directly, decodes the video and audio streams inside it, and exposes every track it finds — so a 4 GB dual-audio MKV opens as fast as a small MP4 and keeps its Turkish audio track and its English subtitles.
Getting an MKV into FoxDL
- From another app: use the share sheet and pick FoxDL, or drag the file onto the window on iPad and Mac.
- From your computer: turn on Wi-Fi Transfer and drop the file into the web browser page it shows.
- From a cloud account, WebDAV server or an external drive: browse to it and play it in place, without copying.
Tap the file in your library and it starts. Playback position, subtitle choice and audio track are remembered per file, so a film you stop halfway through resumes where you left it.
